I’ve given the woodwork on the wheel a coat of oil now, but I’m dissatisfied with the layer of dirt still on the base. This picture shows the original design on the spinning wheel. I’ll try to sand down the dirt, which means I’ll have to repaint it. I think I’ll replicate the rough design, but alter it more to my style. For one, that off red color always makes me think of that foam they spray on airplanes to make sure there’s no frost on it, on winter flights!
I’ve also sanded down the rusty metal with wet sandpaper. It has a completely different feel to it once those layers of dirt and rust were washed away, though the bare metal worries me a bit. Since it will see a lot of wear, I don’t think it can really be protected by paint, so I’ll just have to oil it well and keep it away from any more rain.
