So there’s a game studio that writes glorious, text rich, dark games, that I have followed for a long time. Their most recent kickstarter endeavor is for Mask of the Rose, and one thing they do gloriously well is write interesting updates for their kickstarter campaigns.
In their “interview” with a devil from the game, they mention a cake, listing ingredients, but not how to bake it.
At my salons I serve a simple cake: soured cream and sugar, flour and leavening, an ample portion of honey, and garnish of sugared blush-fungus. If ordinary flour is hard to come by, ground cricket-meal may substitute for a quarter the volume.
But I know how to bake, right? More or less?
I don’t know if you consider egg to be cheating for “leavening”, but it turned out pretty delicious in my opinion. Quite a sturdy cake that’s not too sweet, topped with very sweet honey glaze.
Also I don’t have their magic mushrooms, so candied violet had to do.
Cake
1 dl sugar
2 eggs
2 dl creme fraiche + 1dl milk (because I didn’t have sour cream, but I expect 3dl sour cream should do fine)
3 dl flour
1 tsp baking soda (semi-optional, the egg can carry it)
Glaze
1 tbsp creme fraiche (from the above amount)
1 tbsp good honey
about 1 dl icing sugar (enough to make your glaze a glaze)
Decoration
candied violets (store bought)
Whisk sugar and eggs until fluffy. Put about 1 tbsp creme fraiche aside for glaze, add the rest and whisk smooth. Mix flour with baking soda and add to batter. Butter a small cake tin, pour in batter and bake at 180C until it’s tan and a toothpick comes out clean.
The top rose a lot for me, so I cut off the top to get a flat cake (use the top for cake pops or just snack on it! it’s great to eat with cherry jam and a dollop of creme fraiche)
Mix the glaze with a spoon, and pour over the cake. If you want to add the honey drizzle, do it just before serving, because it eats through the glaze over time.
